Hi all I am new to this and would love to know how you do the animated pics?

easiest way

is to make a series of still pics as frames, then whack them together in a gif animator

Maybe if I add a mouseover that shows a preview on mouseover but loads a little gif otherwise....... hmmm....

there are many ways

lots of us use imageready - it comes with photoshop 6 (and possibly higher). if you've used photoshop it's really straightforward.

I agree

although I do find it really nice to do post-production or late additions to images using Image Ready, the original creation still seems simpler in something like Animation Shop.

I used to use Ulead GIF Animator for optimisation, but IR seems very capable at this too, so it's superceded Ulead.

Imageready which comes with Adobe Photoshop

or GIMP (which is free, I believe).
Or you can even make them with Macromedia Flash!

I find making the images difficult

and coming up with an idea... difficult.

I find it easy to talk about this, so I'm half way to a cure.

1) Can't draw for toffee
2) Tried to host a pic, followed all instructions, it laughed at me.

Latest idea followed an email from my sister, apparently my niece plays 6 instruments in her playschool concert and I had a mental image of this 4 year old one-man-band...

I do the ftp ftp bit,

lovely ms-dos looking screen, type lcd c:\ etc etc, type bin, type put nameofpic.jpg, and that's where it all falls apart and tells me it can't find the file or some such nonsense.

I'll get an expert into my house after Xmas.

you have to create

the file first then store the new one. what you really want is an ftp program. google for "free ftp software" or somesuch. i use robot ftp and leech ftp can be good too

I find having good ideas is difficult

and just farting around tends to work out better than attempting some magnificent thing I've envisioned in my head.

I do them in Fireworks

You can start with a first and last frames and let "tweening" build the rest or add/duplicate frames as you go. Export to animated GIF.

I never thought to use Flash for GIFs

I've only made .swfs with it.
