I saw a system at Xerox EuroPARC about 10 years ago that projected the whole computer display onto your desktop and then used video cameras to watch the desk so you could take a real picture/letter etc straight into the computer just by putting it on your desk.
It was fab - one of their demos was doing a drawing on paper with a pen and having it wrap that drawing around a 3D model of a vase as you drew.
