Almost thereI'd add a couple more frames into the cycle thing if I were you, it seems as if they were all done very hurriedly so no two frames are exactly alike in any way, but similar.

huzzahI think the key will be in frame timing and the crudeness of the lines in each alternating frame.
They seem to use 3/4 frames of animation cycled through a period of around 25 frames per second in the original, all loosely based around the original but not enough to detract from the animation. May be worth a whirl.
oh, and they could never fucking colour in the characters properly either.
