# not exactly
this is a pretty vague area as the creator of the composite should have certain rights.

I was given a consultation by a top IP lawyer just the other week (covered by a generous blog visitor).

However, it is something that emap can use to obfuscate the issue and delay settlement.

Believe it or not, Emap's lawyers - correction highlighted a recent report about intellectual property.
"Alexander Ross (from company that represents emap - my words) points out that the recent Gowers Review of intellectual property has recommended allowing free usage of pictures for satirical purposes. This would certainly be embraced by Rob Manuel of b3ta.com, a frequently hilarious site that thrives on its users scooping images from the internet and tinkering with them in Photoshop."

the story goes on with a quote from some ginger bloke :
"If you don't want to see your work used, then never show it to anyone." - Rob Manuel.

it's when it's used for other people's profit when I get annoyed.

I think you've mentioned that actually.

# yup!
it's when people make money or gain free marketing capital out of it.

and other companies do when they dole out prizes via Zoo to people who send our creations in.

# it's a trickly and murky ground sometimes...
... and sometimes this is used in a rather cynical and overbearing fashion, but for now, I'll restrict my comment to Rob's quote:

We all gotta eat. Many of us use the interwebs to promote our talent and allowing the free/conditional exchange of watermarked work is part of that - but when there's profit to be had, we will want and deserve our fair share (whatever that may be). I doubt Rob gave this same advice to Joel during the recent Coke unpleasantness:
