It's a good idea
if you can repossess a house for non-payment if the house is worth more that what you lent. If it isn't (like is happening in America), then you realise that your sub-prime policy was actually quite a stupid idea.
lending someone loads of money, knowing full well that they can't repay it, purely so you can take their house is an evil idea not a good one.

But then the whole area of housing seems to attract the scum of the earth; estate agents, banks and so on. All renowned for being as unpleasant as you can get without being psychopathic.
