I had some spare cash - and, as it's a fairly new technique, as long as i keep going back every week or so for the piercer to look at it and take a photo, i'll get the next ones very cheap too; or discount for a friend, as i'm not hugely into piercings myself.

I had some spare cash. So yes, I decided to get my arm pierced. Because I had some spare cash. And that is why my arm is pierced.

I usually find overtly tattooed/pierced people have nothing to say, so become a conversation piece.

i have tattoos, yeah, but they're all hidden under average clothing and are rarely seen by anyone.
and, apart from a couple of ear piercings, this is the only piercing i have, and i got it because i liked the idea. Again, it's nearly always hidden under sleeves and rarely shown off in general life.
perhaps you have been unfortunate enough to only meet very narcissistic tattooed/pierced people. But you probably know many tattooed/pierced people who never show them off at all.
