it's the 'cutesyness' of the kids' stuff. I enjoyed one of them (I think it was called
'Legend of the Overfiend'?) purely because of the absurdity but I avoid them as a general rule.

I could suggest "Beserk" or "High School Rumble"
or "GTO" which I've read. GTO stands for Great Teacher Onizuka.
As far as I remember, the art in those isn't cutesy, and is more akin to comic book style.
