# Dells still ship with XP pro as an option...
not for much longer though I think.
I've had the chance to use Vista now on clients' computers, but only in a fairly superficial way, so I don't really know what's under the hood or how it handles long-term. I'm in no hurry to change.

# oh no, no dell for me.
too many horror stories about them have i encountered. i'll have a local shop cobble me up a hybrid bastard.

no vista, no way. it is an ick.

# I've always had good luck with Dells
and since I've been buying their XPS systems I've been really happy with the support.
The main downside I've encountered with Dells is their use of proprietory or Dell-version hardware, but that's far less common now, and the customization process allows you avoid it.
I've had no personal experience with Gateways, but evil_twin has had some really crappy luck with them at work, and the support has particularly sucked.

# dell support in canada has an awful reputation.
no firsthand experience, but the word in the gutter is that they take ages to correct anything and often say "that's not covered on your warranty/in your country" just to get rid of people.

# The thing about buying an XPS system
is that they have a separate dedicated support line. I've don't think I've ever waited longer than 10 minutes to get talk to someone, and they've almost always offered me software/system support even out of warranty.
Damn I sound like a commercial, but they've saved my ass with clients a couple of times recently and made me look good. That's worth a lot to me.
