IN THE LAND OF DIAL-UP.
also Ittybitty's laptop had a slow melt on Win2000 so I had the fun of rebuilding it on 98 and hunting for drivers and such.
but I got it going in the end.

98 drivers are still available?
Why no XP? It's the only Win OS I've actually positively liked.

well yeah ashally it's a compaq armada, about five years old I guess.
It was originally supplied with 98 (according to the sticker on the bottom), and it does seem to run more efficiently now.. it had previously died of spyware / viruses at the hands of the previous owners and had 2000 reinstalled. Lasted about three months before clunging up again. It's only a pentium three, might not handle XP too well.

so the drivers I needed were post-2000 but 98-compatible.
cuz as far as the OS was concerned this hardware was FReAKY SHIT FROM THE FUCKING FUTURE, MAN.

Haha
FREAKY SHIT LOL Thinking about it, I got on ok with 98, but that BSOD appeared far too frequently to really feel comfortable. Also: I just remembered, when I used 98 I found something online that claimed to be the 'solution' to the BSOD... it turned out to be a method for changing the colour of the crash screen, so you could have a RED Screen Of Death instead. Helpful.

It was only open for about 24 hours I think.
Personally I thought it was geniunely funny at first, particularly the original thread started by Gronkpan, but by the same token I did understand people being unhappy about it when it expanded beyond that.

i'm currently using a p3 with xp pro.
it's a dinosaur but it works.
*is prepared to buy a new computer soon, should he be able to have xp pro loaded as everything since has sucked*

Dells still ship with XP pro as an option...
not for much longer though I think. I've had the chance to use Vista now on clients' computers, but only in a fairly superficial way, so I don't really know what's under the hood or how it handles long-term. I'm in no hurry to change.

oh no, no dell for me.
too many horror stories about them have i encountered. i'll have a local shop cobble me up a hybrid bastard.
no vista, no way. it is an ick.

I've always had good luck with Dells
and since I've been buying their XPS systems I've been really happy with the support. The main downside I've encountered with Dells is their use of proprietory or Dell-version hardware, but that's far less common now, and the customization process allows you avoid it. I've had no personal experience with Gateways, but evil_twin has had some really crappy luck with them at work, and the support has particularly sucked.

dell support in canada has an awful reputation.
no firsthand experience, but the word in the gutter is that they take ages to correct anything and often say "that's not covered on your warranty/in your country" just to get rid of people.

The thing about buying an XPS system
is that they have a separate dedicated support line. I've don't think I've ever waited longer than 10 minutes to get talk to someone, and they've almost always offered me software/system support even out of warranty. Damn I sound like a commercial, but they've saved my ass with clients a couple of times recently and made me look good. That's worth a lot to me.
