i am loathed to make two of anything so there wont be another like this.

that's the ticket, each one should be 'bespoke' and perhaps 'numbered' or have a specific signature.
there could be little nuances to each one which make them significantly different.
If you enjoyed making them so much, may be nice to do two or three and see how they go after this one sadly goes. I bet you'll hate having to part with it.
Just think of all the other sci-fi robots/droids etc you could embrace with this sort of skill and patience :)
I haven't checked out your deviantart page on this, which I really should. Is it a blow-by-blow account of everything?
edit: you know, there is another way to perhaps give everyone a fair crack of the whip, rather than sell it straight on. If so many b3tans (etc) love it, perhaps they'd be willing to pay £1-£2 for an online 'raffle' ticket for the chance to win it. You'd only have to shift 500 at £2 a go for £1000, and you could give a percentage of that to charity as well. Or, 200 at £5 ticket each. I'm sure you'd rustle up 200 to 500 'interested' parties with the chance to win that as well. Plus, £2 isn't a great lot to shell out for the chance to win it, some people donate more for icons here :)
/just an idea

A steampunk Terminator would be time consuming
but thoroughly excellent.

Steampunk daleks would sell like hot cakes
the present mrs. architect indulges in card making as a hobby, and managed to get hold of some dalek and cybermen rubber stamps to use.
She's sold shedloads of cards with 'em on since, and at £2.99 a pop minimum (as they're all hand-made) it's been quite a money spinner on the side.

Yes! A raffle would be great!
And I'd have a chance of getting it too ;)

hmmm, good point
perhaps set up an entry on /calendar for people to 'sign up' to show their interest in paying £2 a ticket for a raffle, and link up loads of piccies, and a link to your deviantart pages. That way you'll see the level of interest for doing it that way.
Then 'whore' the link here in your profile and sig, maybe on deviantart as well, and maybe even some blogs.
get rob to newsletter it (if poss.) with the promise that, say 25% goes to charity, so it's not just all going in your pocket, although you'll be getting paid for time spent and materials etc, (75%)
then, but a cheap book of raffle tickets, assign all those who pledged £ a number, then just do a webcam 'ticket out of hat' winner and stick it up on /links :)
/maybe needs more thought this, btu be willing to help if you wanted, seeing as I did suggest it
Of course, it all depends when you need the money by ;)

You said £1-£2 a ticket,
but just knowing the effort put into it I'd easily pay a fiver for it.
And of course, he could advertise it on deviantart, and wherever else, the more tickets sold the better :)

I was thinking most people would perhaps pay a fiver, but didn't like to say
£2 for 1 ticket or 3 for £5
