And just for my own two pennies' worth:
I can't understand the appeal behind the Beatles either. Yes, they were popular and inspired a lot of other bands. What they didn't do - the common misconception - is invent all those genres with which they're often credited. Merseybeat, Psychedelic, British Blues, etc., existed before the Beatles dabbled with them. To their credit, they probably helped to popularise these styles, but they didn't create them.
Still don't see why people like them so much though. Woo to all the Kinks and Zombies fans and, most importantly, how has the thread got this far without a mention of The Who?*
*And not in the "Horton hears..." sense
