Although this may happen with the one cent piece if metal values continue with their present trend.
In the UK, pre-1992 "coppers" are made of bronze and currently don't exceed their face value.
From 1992 to 1996 they could be made of either bronze or copper-plated steel. The steel ones are unlikely to ever be worth more than their face value either.
From 1996 onwards they are all made of copper-plated steel.
This, incidentally, is why more recent "coppers" are magnetic, but older ones aren't.

i always wondered why the new ones were magnetic!
hmmm does this mean surgical steel is magnetic too?

That's why you can't go in an MRI machine if you have any metal implants, I've got four plates in my hand that set off metal detectors
