[challenge entry] I think this compo's getting to me.
I just went out and bought a new cordless drill to hang a mirror for Mrs. H.

Said drill, by the way, comes with a reversible screwdriver bit, but no feckin' drill bits. Mnnnnnnnnng.

Anyways, it got me to thinking...

# did you buy
an electric screwdriver?
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:07, archived)
# Nope.
Deffo a drill.

# now now, did you buy a drill
or some bits of moulded plastic around a cheap Chinese motor that would be hard-pressed to whip cream? ;)
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:13, archived)
# Well put like that...
it's a piece of crap, but tbh I don't plan on using it for anything particularly heavy duty.

Although the culinary application's quite a good thought actually.

# just don't get hammered
you might screw it up

# heh!

# I bought a drill from argos once that came with 15 assorted screwdriver bits.
But it didn't actually do screwdriving. I had a right cob-on when I took it back.

# I must inform you
that neither the driver bits nor the drill bits you need are worth a wank. They are always made of toffee.
Just spend a tenner on a set of tungsten coated bits.
btw, if you are drilling into an internal cavity wall then you don't need the bits or the drill for that matter ;)
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:10, archived)
# But you might need a machine that goes ping
to tell you where the wires are.
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:12, archived)
# well it's quite a heavy mirror.
It's pulled a nail and a non-rawplugged screw out thus far, so I'm thinking throw power at it.
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:13, archived)
# as I said.
depends if you have a cavity or not.
solid brick needs brown plug, 2" 8 screw and a number 7 masonry drill bit.

Plasterboard cavity needs a metal cavity wall fixing, hammer and number 3 philips screwdriver.

# M12 Coach screw's into wooden joists FTW!*

*could be full of fail and overkill

# Nice.
I bought a nice Makita drill last weekend for some projects I have around the house. Could've saved myself half the money and got something cheaper, but meh.

# buying cheap tools is not saving money.
It's false economy as you replace them every 18 months.
If you can afford DeWalt then you buy that, failing that it's Makita, if you really are a pauper then Ryobi but anything else is just tat to tempt diyers.

# Well I feel a bit better now.
I'm going to demolish my asbestos roofed garage this weekend. Don't really need my drill for that :(

# Woah. Really tapped into a vein of expertise here...
Is this a professional interest, perchance?
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:22, archived)
# Yes.
I have a construction and office refurbishment company.

# agreed - buy cheap - pay twice
with makita you have made a good choice.

If anyone is interested I could bring in a 40ft container of b3ta badged drills - assuming pre-orders.

14.4v and 2 batts - I would pay around $14 per sku - much deal so you will buy at £49.99 ex vat.

deal - yes?
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:26, archived)
# It does seem that power tools are popular with b3tans...
not sure you'd shift a whole container though.
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:31, archived)
# yes - point taken - cheers
20ft container then but end user price just rose to £57.31 ex vat

deal?

# hahaha!
Someone wrote to the newspaper t'other day relating the tale of his first oscilloscope. After trying to figure it out for himself for hours, he eventually opened the manual. The first page said:

"So you've tried it your way - now try it our way"
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:23, archived)
# I think, reluctantly, I would resort to the manual for an oscilloscope.
But I'm buggered if my male ego is going to need any help with a dril!
(, Fri 7 Nov 2008, 16:25, archived)
# Nor me!
*drills hole through hand*
*screws face to shelf*
*hammer-actions through neighbours' cat*

hmmm...

where's that manual?
