# Well someone should tell him as he seems very much alive
And if they can threaten me with court action when I I've never had a driving lesson, don't have a licence or a car I don't think death will stop them:P

# Ha, bureaucracy at its finest.
Reminds me of TV licensing.

What... what do you mean you don't have a TV? What sort of nutter doesn't have a TV? We just assumed everyone had a TV. Maaan. Hey, Dave, this guy doesn't have a TV! Maaan.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 14:55, archived)
# I've had that.
I took great pleasure in fighting them all the way.
Letter.
Bloke at door being turned away.
Letter saying that bloke would come round again and if I didn't let him in they'd get a court order.
Bloke turning up and sent away.
Letter saying they were going to obtain a court order.
Bloke turning up with member of the constabulary and a court order.
Me not recognising inspector as I legal entity entitled to have a court order.
Policeman confirming that in fact only policeman had the right.
Me and policeman wandering round may place
Policeman telling inspector that I didn't ahve a tv.
Me telling policeman that you really did get a lot of service out of your licence fee.

# Haha.
Does this repeat yearly?
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:05, archived)
# No
I think maybe they have a siren that goes off when they enter me into their computer. As I live in at work I wouldn't have to but I still don't have a TV.
Tv's dead man! Internet is TV!

# You do realise
that if you watch anything on your PC which is streamed live then you have to pay for a TV license?
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:11, archived)
# That's incorrect.
If you watch TV on your computer you do (ie you have a TV card).
You don't need it to watch streamed programmes from a website TV channel or otherwise.

# before long we'll be having media device licenses
this will include tv, dvd, computer, mobile phones and fuck knows what else
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:25, archived)
# I don't think so
We only pay a licence fee because of the BBC. SO I think there'll be on licence fee but the BBC are going to have to evolve. I think they already know this and this why they're paying a lot of attention to the BBC as a web format.

# they've been squeaking about computer licences for a while now
obviously there's been some idiotic suggestions from some italian politicians but computer licences, yes, it's going to happen, one way or another

after all, we must protect the content produces or save the children or the whales or something
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:32, archived)
# I'n not sure.
We seem to be the only country that does charge a fee. I've noticed however that I watch the ads on the streamed TV asTHere's only aoubt 30-60 seconds of them and there's no time to do anything else.
So maybe overall the influence of an advert will be stronger having less.

# well
an example

another

expect more of this nonsense
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:47, archived)
# hmm
You must be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. It makes no difference what equipment you use - whether it’s a laptop, PC, mobile phone, digital box, DVD recorder or a TV set - you still need a licence.

You do not need a TV Licence to view video clips on the internet, as long as what you are viewing is not being shown on TV at the same time as you are viewing it.

contradictory advice there
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:50, archived)
# More nonsense.
You do not pay a license for the BBC. You pay the government for a license to operate broadcast receiving equipment. The BBC is funded in turn by the government for providing public service broadcasts.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:42, archived)
# er not quite
it is shared between the 5 terrestrial channels. the beeb gets the lions share though

# BBC gets 3.4billion
Chanel 4 gets 50million
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 17:41, archived)
# I'll repeat.
If you watch anything on your PC which is live streamed. ( i.e football, olympics, things of that nature ) then you have to pay. I checked the wording of the statement released when they introduced this in 2006 before I posted.
You should know better than to tell me I'm wrong when you know I know I'm right ;)

edit:/
"Why do I need a licence for my PC?

You only need a licence if you use your computer to watch programmes at the same time as they are being shown on TV.

Before now, this has not been a major problem as very few programmes are available simultaneously on air and online.

Computer users only needed a TV licence if they had a special video card that could receive TV signals.

But the TV Licensing Authority now says watching the BBC's World Cup coverage over broadband will require a licence.

This is to stop people receiving TV programmes for free on their computer when they would have to pay to see them on a regular television.

Is this just about the World Cup?

No. The TV Licensing Authority says you need a licence to watch any TV station broadcasting within the UK on your computer.

However, you are free to watch archived programmes or downloadable clips without a licence. "

# You misunderstand me when I say streamed
I did not mean live tv. I think you can only watch live on the BBC site anyway. I don't really see the point of watching live TV on your computer. The whole point to me is to be able to watch what you want at a time fitting you.
Additionall I believe we ware arguing the same point.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:49, archived)
# I know, but I like to argue. ;)
it's just the live bit which makes a huge difference but technically it stands true that you need one. I don't think it will be long before they say that if you have broadband and a PC then you have the capability to receive so you will pay. In much the same way as if you have a TV in your loft and swear it never is used you have to pay because you have the equipment on site capable of receiving broadcasts. Remember this is a government tax and they need as many people paying it as possible.

# i am now complaining to MP's MEP's and newspapers about TV licences
At the next review (2012 ?) a licence will be required for broadband unless the European Parliament rules it unlawfull or forces BBC to be encrypted
Also the TVLA does have powers of statuary entry to commercial premises but not to domestic premises
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 16:15, archived)
# they used to have a seperate radio license as well
which now got immaligimated into he tv license.. and I don't think any one cares about unlicensed radios any more.

# Wonderful, another tv-less person.
I daresay that may happen to me one day.
Not having a tv seems to be a heresy these days.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:07, archived)
# I remember when I first got rid of mine. It was about 98 of something.
I really missed it for a couple of week. I do watch programmes but just on TV channels website. It's pretty much jusr comedy, docos and news.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:10, archived)
# Haven't had one for 20+ years.
I'd watch stuff if someone around me had one or the odd film, other than that I did other hobbies, music etc. Youtube can be fun though.

# bbc site has a great streaming system and the C4 software has an excellent achive
But you need to know hw to disable the filesharing part when you're not using it.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:24, archived)
# Filesharing part?
It is some sort of torrent/p2p host?
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:36, archived)
# Essentially.
It's a good system; it must save the beeb a hell of a lot of bandwidth. The software is a bit invasive though and will run in the background, downloading and uploading.
Or at least, that's how it used to work.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 15:50, archived)
# I hate things that run in the background endlessly.
HijackThis is useful for this.

/old computer running big games.
(, Sun 11 Jan 2009, 16:00, archived)
# Aye,
HijackThis, Sysinternals (Autoruns and Process Explorer) and CCleaner.
Top stuff.
