then optimise (difference) or optimise for gif.

Save it first under another name as optimise does strange and wonderous things.

Filters->Animation->Optimize (for Gif)

^-- That's a good start, but make sure you save a copy first. You may have to use "Cumulative" as your frame disposal if you do this.
