When I was teaching EFL, I found the phrase

"It's due to the Latin origin" useful in fielding any obstreporous queries.

at the moment, the only queries I'm worried about are

"Miss, how do you say .... in French" because my answer will have to be "I'll get back to you on that later"

Maybe I should just stick to German, which I know is still fluent.

hmm, I'm right paranoid about being mugged/pick-pocketed at all times

I got done the other day - it was rubbish - I walked away with my camera, iPod and wallet, but they did get my £50 mobile phone.

It says something about the state of the country when you can walk away from a mugging feeling like you've ripped them off ...
