it results in characters from one film randomly standing in the set of another film which even if very well done has not been particularly funny so far IMHO.

The humour...
Is usually derived from the juxtaposition of the two films. So. Putting a traditionally sombre or sad deep film in the style of some pixar kids thing, or vice versa. Or a documentary in action film boxart.
