
My mate wants this on a t-shirt. He wants the red transparent
so he can print the black onto a red shirt. I've tried colour
select in PS but when I try to save as a transparent gif it just
comes out white.

try using T shirt transfer paper that is for WHITE fabrics. They are transparent except for what you print on them so if the black is darker than the red background of the T shirt (which it will be) then it should work fine.
