I have a bit of a phlegmy cold. Should I swallow the stuff that drips down the back of my throat, or spit it out?

and as sick or wrong as this may sound, I often swallow it. As an asthmatic, I tend to get terribly wheezy when I have anything like a chesty cough so the phlegm seems to supress it.
