tell me about it - he suffers agonising pains and vomitting at times

It recurs?
Fucking hell, I'm guessing you're in the UK. He probably needs ERCP, it's possible he has a gallstone stuck in his common bile duct. The pain is fucking ridiculous.

He's had them all look at every aspect they ruled out gallstones
but 2/3rd of his pancreas has rotted away and he had to have a by-pass from the Pancreas to the stomach called a Puestow procedure
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puestow_procedure
apparently a very rare operation - however he still suffers vomitting which they are not entirely sure what is causing it, probably the pain itself.

I had ERCP last month.
There's a 7% chance it will lead to pancreatitis. Of that 7%, about 5% die. Having experienced severe pancreatitis several times, I was honestly more afraid of the pain than I was of dying.

Anyway I'm not going to die.
The operation was a success so I can never die now.

There is an operation we are hoping will help out
where they inject some chemical into the nerves of the Pancreas to stop pain being transmitted from it - apparently it's quite successful. Long term however eventually the Pancreas will need to be removed leaving him diabetic and reliant on tablets to break down the food in his stomach but I think he will be glad when the pain ends.
