This is a normal post all the old drunks I know are on statins
you'd need a dataset where nobody is on preventative or blood thinning medication to draw a real comparison

This is a normal post It's not really talking about drunks
It's talking about moderate drinkers who have a drink pretty much everyday and it's a nice bottle of red, or 3 or 4 beers.

Turns out I'm going to live forever.

This is a normal post A bottle of red a day is moderate drinking?
You may wish to get your GP's opinion on that.

This is a normal post There's around five or six "drinks" in a bottle of wine by my estimate
So that would put you over the moderate drinker upper bound but still a little higher in life expectancy than non-drinkers if those studies are to be believed.

This is a normal post "drinks" are different by the country
+ "non drinkers" aren't the healthiest bunch, better watch out for those confounding factors (similarly to people with lower than average BMI).

This is a normal post Well I used the American definition as the author is American.

This is a normal post ^ top amount for moderate drinking is a lot less than people think, iirc about one large beer daily for a male.
Yes, 210 g weekly of pure ethanol for Ireland, the highest limit I've found. That's about one large beer daily maximum.

This is a normal post Why? All GPs do is toe the party line.
The NHS party line is currently to say "don't drink at all", which is proven to definitely shorten your life expectancy.

The government guideline on "units per week" is purely a political morality statement to show how hard they are on the evil demon drink...which is why it keeps being reduced, not because of medical studies.

Also how individual peoples bodies process alcohol varies hugely with things like body mass, height and indeed your genetic makeup. Saying the units per week is the same for me (6 foot 4, 13 stone) as for a skinny midget is totally bollocks - It should at least be a calculation like BMI (well that's a flawed calculation...but point still stands).

Cheers!

This is a normal post another problem with it
is that the absolute non-drinkers tend to have a higher population of people who are not drinking *for a reason* (not just taking statins, but there's a lot of people who used to be alcoholics and are teetotal now).
So the non-drinker group would be slightly more likely to have historic health issues than the people who drink small amounts, for example.

So it might look like having 1 or 2 drinks is healthier (in fact it might be the case), but the data just doesn't reflect that.

This is a normal post Oddly enough, the statisticians have thought about that...
There's a concise overview, with links to references, here:
