This scene was when I first stumbled acros Brass Eye when flicking channels back in . Funniest thing about it is they have her reading huge key cards off camera so her eyes are all over the place. That's what made me realise it was a spoof show. Then it clicked they were talking about Vertical Fields. Can't beleive that was in 1997.

Brass Eye has been spot on with a number of predictions, it's only a matter of time before we're blasting paedos into space.

Great idea.
Cuts down on pollution by transporting goods if you can grow them next to point of sale.

i'm guessing this wouldn't be competitive with traditionally farmed produce
due to the cost of heating/lighting and equipment will be interesting to see in action though

Depends on how efficient the solar panels are on the roof
As you use them to convert all light to just the wave length the specific type of plant uses to grow. So you can fit more in the same space and use robots to tend to them. Which is more people out of jobs (which might be a good or a bad thing depending on what model society goes for)

Would be better use of the roof space to use dyes to shift the spectrum into the region you need and pipe the light about
Commercial solar panels are 10-14% efficient.
TBH, you're better off putting up a wind turbine in our climate.

also once you've bought all the lights/solar
they eventually need to be replaced think its around a few years with the led not sure on the solar panel but still pricey compared with sunlight and soil

The open agriculture project from MIT has an interesting open source project for growing your own plants in a box.
