Title:
BBC plans to launch 'Beeb' rival to Alexa
Description:
It will work on smart speakers, TVs and mobiles but would Beeb be a good wake-up word?

The iplayer is/was a perfectly fine piece of software, did what it needed to, and seemed really popular. What do they do? Spend a load of cash on some new "BBC Sounds" thing, then put loads of effort into getting people to use it when it proves less popular than what they already had. It's mildly baffling.

Took me ages to figure out why I couldn't find 5 Live Sports Extra on the website at the weekend. Turns out they'd canned the Radio section and crammed it into the Sounds section where I'd never think to look.

Nothing to do with being run by a bunch of inept, institutionalised Muppets.

but whoever put the Sounds app together for them really made a mess. The suggestions are particularly weird. After listening to a play from Radio 3 the algorithm seems to think that episode 4 of a 6 part series that I've never listened to would be a good choice. How could it work so bad without it being deliberate.

But it's being filled more and more with utter horseshite.

It's not like the BBC is just a TV channel. BBC Micro*?
It's software not hardware, and they've generally done well there with the iplayer (sounds app aside). It'll probably just be a pointlessly voice activated iplayer.
*without which I'd have never played Granny's Garden

The Micro was a product of it's time. Microcomputers had clear untapped potential, and the BBC were instrumental in getting them into people's homes.
However...
The boat has sailed with voice assistants. They've been on every smartphone and therefore in the pocket of nearly everyone in the country for the last five years. The last eight in the case of Siri.

they'd get even more of a kicking from the right and everyone would just moan about the licence fee.
Was that the case then? (genuine question)
