modern world and all that. why not have a programme dedicated to your old decca navigation systems while we're at it? or announcing the price of coal.

I reckon it's a comfortable convenience, but nothing you couldn't look up on your phone before sailing. if you're going out of cell range and spending nights at sea, you probably want to fork out for marine wifi unless you're thor heyadahl

but the opinions of a handful of landlubbers on b3ta.com/links should really be all that anyone needs to know.

though experience with oil makes me wary of indicating one price as the traders will likely deal with many varieties and I don't claim to know what type is most suitable to whatever coal reliant shipping still exists

yeah and while we're at it, lets get rid of news and weather shows on radio and tv - fucking pointless legacy crap!!
edit: why even bother keeping tv and radio, we have wifi, netflix, spotify and youtube etc.. now to replace tv and radio

Broadcast Radio survives/survived because it could be received over long distances without the need for infrastructure to support its delivery at point of use and without the need for expensive equipment to do so. That and you can receive it on the move. In 2024 the forecast spend on radio advertising in the U.S. is expected to be $12.48 billion, people are still listening at home, at work and on the move.
Also wifi itself relies on radio waves to function as do other RF reliant technologies like phones (smart and dumb).

small fishing vessels can't carry much more than a standard VHF marine radio but long wave signals can literally be picked up with a fairly normal radio for miles. As the BBC are slowly shutting down the LW band its only a matter of time before it will just be on FM/DAB but old school mariners like to use it as a way to check the data they are getting is good.
Also TLDR - its a tradition innit
