Mandelson was picked precisely because of his flawed character, his record, and especially his links to Epstein and Trump. Starmer hinted at it before, but now he's weaselling away from it all. Better to be thought of as a failed risk taker than disengaged and incompetent, I'd have thought.

He may be a bastard, but he's our bastard.
Also this quote:-
It's probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in.
Lyndon B. Johnson
On FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, as quoted in The New York Times (31 October 1971).

the Trump-Epstein link, isn't it? If nothing else, Farage should be getting a lot of shit for his connections too.

I find the lack of communication from this government frustrating, you can see Starmer doing some old fashioned Yes Minister gamesmanship which impresses a wonk like me, but he seems to be doing nothing to control the narrative to the masses. He seems detached from the whole propaganda side of politics, which is kind of admirable but also deeply exploitable. Starmer needs a good spin doctor.
The way Starmer's blaming The Blob for this scandal could either be pre-empting or seeding a future Farage premiership destroying the civil service. Interesting times, damn it.

Scared to criticise Trump or Brexit, leaving Farage unchallenged.
For no obvious benefit to themselves.

I think the majority of the PLP has denounced Trump in some way, at some time. The chancellor's recent visit to America was characterised by her criticism of Trump, for example.
