er, why destroy the boat?
waste of ammo, fuel, time etc. Pollutes the ocean a teensy bit more and they could have flogged the boat to someone for extra drug busting cash

er, because piracy is the only use for a speedboat in that part of the world...
... so they'd be ensuring further attacks. Waterskiing just hasn't caught on in the horn of Africa.

Fair point, but...
...the navy do actually practice firing the guns anyway.
Would be a bit of a problem if they never actually tried live ammo until someone was shooting back.
