This is a normal post I can only think of two ways this might happen
1) The dyes aren't actually mixing and are being held in layers by the corn starch.

2) Witchcraft.

I'm going for the latter.

basically your stretching the corn starch , the dye pervades through the layers and gets span out, till its re aligned by reversal. Hence the 'deck of cards' reference.

I will explain magnets next time :D

This is a normal post About time we got this straight.
Magnets are one pole of a bound dipole.

The other pole, of which a solitary magnet has never been seen in nature without is misery.

Everywhere you get magnets, you find misery, and vice versa.

So.

Science class? Might have been fascinating, but the only reason the magnets worked was that someone in the room was hating the entire experience. And aware that there were two whole lessons before lunch.

The time your power went out? Some miserably guy had chucked himself in the local sub-station: when you get magnetism and misery close to electricity, the magnet/misery dipole self-annihilates in an endo-electric reaction.

Note how magnets and misery can be separated in time, but not in space. Out on a Friday after a few pints, you have tons of magnetism. Misery follows on the Saturday morning with a pounding hangover.

Research continues on trying to find the anti-magnet to the "hair of the dog" effect, though. I'm thinking some huge magnet is going to turn up in the shape of a magnetic meteor the size of Deimos some day and pay us all back for all the free anti-misery we've been taking.

tl;dr - I'm not bloody going into maxwell's equations at this time of the night.
