I remember reading an old biography of Patrick Macnee called Blind in one Ear that said that the show was so popular in France that the new series got financed by a brand of French champagnes (you always see a bottle in the show). These series (and the Persuaders) were airing continuously in frogland for a period of 30 years are are still considered "cult" grade. It would explain why this episode was never aired in the UK (too shocking) but that they took the trouble of dubbing Gambit to show that scene on french TV where a pair of woodchipping boobies would be seen as "artistique" and as a perfect warning against the dangers of feminism (the losing one's finger bit).
