First off pick your style - Mountain Banjo, clawhammer style, Scruggs etc.
If you want to play "duelling banjos" style stuff Scruggs is the style you are looking for.
It's tuned differently from a guitar so takes a bit of getting used to.
Scruggs is a very "picky style" so you will need nimble fingers. It's all based around "rolls" which are basically picked chords.
It's quite hard but sounds great when done well.

All I can add is that if I was to have a 'style' for ANYTHING. The it so would be called "Clawhammer style!!!"

I like the sound of the Scruggs style, though my fingers aren't very nimble anymore :(
