how many hobbies, interests, skills, call them what you will, fall into that category? Photoshopping pics for B3ta comps is definitely in the good-but-useless category. Great skill and technique involved, takes lots of practice to become good at it, will amuse a few people, but ultimately useless.
As an owner of a few yo-yos, juggling balls, etc. I happily fall into that category too.

I'd argue that perfecting Photoshop is a little more useful in getting a job than making a tennis ball look like it is a floating immovable object though :D

but he does make his living with this stuff, he's also done TV and Film work off the back of it as well.
