it's basically trading off one slow and painful death for a different one not too far down the road.

Dogs aren't supposed to outlive humans, that's just the way it is. It doesn't matter what the owner does, their dog is still mortal. The greatest kindness you can do for your companion is to recognise and accept when your time together is at an end. It's the unwritten duty you take on when you decide to give a home to a pet, to spare them their suffering once their days are over.

Prolonging their pain simply to postpone the inevitable is not love, it's pure selfishness.
