here in the U.S. take place early evening around 6ish.
Sounds weird that, I know (as an Englishman who has recently moved to the US and can understand how odd reliable weather is) but you can pretty much set you watch by it in the summertime. When we have a blisteringly hot day, we get a kick ass thunderstorm between 6-8pm without fail.

I really enjoy thunderstorms but didn't see any when I went to Chicago :( - it wasn't summer though.
