So, if you're a bloke on a bike, get your speed up and freewheel, the angular momentum will keep you upright, not pedalling will stop the wobble, the plank is almost straight, compensate by leaning, keep your eyes on the front wheel. If you're a woman pushing a barrel: Take it very slow. (The physics would dictate that you do the same as the bike, as long as it's fairly straight as the angular momentum of a full barrel is huge and would keep it on target) They should take it slow for obvious reasons.

If you focus too much on keeping the tyre perfectly centred on the beam, you begin to make small, abrupt and unnecessary corrections. Then you you have to correct that correction, then that one, etc; not helped by the fact that as soon as you push the bars in one direction, the bike tries to go the other way.
