Our school boycotted Tango
After some kid nearly got his eardrum burst from a Tango slap. Everyone was copying the fat orange guy from on the advert and as usual one twat just had to go too far.
Tango never regained it's popularity at the school again and the ad men changing the slap to a kiss didn't really do it any favours.

The rumour was
That he did it to himself in some way and then blamed the ad so as not to appear retarded

I'm inclined to believe it's real.
I'm sure someone with medical knowledge will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that rapid, extreme, changes in pressure are responsible for the majority of burst ear drums. So I would expect a lot of people to have suffered if anyone was moronic enough to smack a palm over their ears.
