It's all the fault of bleach and peanut butter.
The original .gif was designed as a play on words with Jif, the American brand of peanut butter. Of course, what with Jif being a bathroom cleaner in the UK (before it became Cif), pronouncing .gif with a soft 'g' became a lot less glamorous.

I find the whole Jif/Gif thing quite annoying*
since I used to pronounce it "Jif" but was assured that the correct pronunciation was "Gif", since the G was the first letter of Graphics, which has a hard G.

It sounded reasonable to me at the time so I changed, and 20 years later I find out I changed to saying it wrong all this time.

*Yes, I am easily annoyed.

It's pronounced with a hard 'G'
Unless you're more Germanic and pronounce it "yiff".

I'll join you in being easily annoyed, at least by petty bullshit.
I have never heard one single person pronounce it "jif", so I must admit I got on my high horse when I heard the creator say "It's 'jif' and anyone who says differently is a rotten egg", or something to that effect.
