This is a question Redundant technology

Music on vinyl records, mobile phones the size of house bricks and pornography printed on paper. What hideously out of date stuff do you still use?

Thanks to boozehound for the suggestion

I know fuck all about computers
I really know nothing about computers, nor do I care to. As far as I am concerned, if I can go on the internet and listen to music on it, that's fine by me. A while ago (about two years, if I'm honest), my laptop broke and I got donated an old desktop that was lying around someone's house. A couple of weeks ago, one of my more tech-savvy mates came round to fix something on it.

I was treated to a two hour lecture for still using Windows XP. Apparently that's wrong or something.

Also, when I moved house recently I found some tapes that I made - in 2005. Been having fun listening to them again. There's something about their godawful quality that Spotify just can't beat.

Whats wrong with XP?
Don't say "Vista is better".

I think he wanted to put me on to Linux. I had to calmly explain that the fact that he had to come to my house to install the internet when I changed my provider meant that I probably wasn't a member of the Linux demographic. He might be awesome with computers but logic isn't his forte.

XP is not broken, so don't fix it.
Hey, i work as a web designer for a large company and i have XP at home. And i am not planning to change it just yet.

WTF OMG You're using XP!!
I work with computers, spent most of my life playing with them for fun, fix them for money, fix them for free, make things for people...90% of my day is in front of a screen...

And even I get bored with the sort of anal IT geek spod who lectures people like this. They give us all a bad name.

computers
i don't know a great amount but i do know that our IT departmemt refuse to deal with anything other than XP (its a big company 3000+)
so i get to use cutting edge software on a spanking new 64bit workstation on a 32bit 10 year operating system
actually that sounds like i know quite a lot
makes me so mad i have thought of moving to the dark side and get a mac (IT will not support at all)

IT don't need to support Macs
because they *never* break, ever.

Tapes from 2005?
Thats just mental! I mean 5 year old cassettes! They went out in like, 2004.
(, Fri 5 Nov 2010, 13:29, closed)

Achem. The point was slightly more that I was still using bloody tapes to record stuff I wanted to keep in 2005. In fact, the only reason I'm still not doing it is that I don't have anything I want to record.

I can't be arsed to look it up, and I'm sure Microsoft would tell porkies anywway, but I'd be pretty sure there are still more XP users out there than there are Vista or 7 users.

XP is
the best OS since Windows 98 SE, which also fuckin' ruled. XP is a geezer, don't change it because one of these 'Nefffggggg, XP, well it's alriiiiight, but ' cunts tells you to.

XP and Ubuntu: the best operating systems I have ever used.
I am ever so tempted to get rid of Vista and replace it with XP. Vista is a pile of shite. XP is ace and even looks like a silly face.

Windows 7
Is what Vista should have been, and the 64bit version leaves XP standing still, gawping stupidly...
(, Fri 5 Nov 2010, 14:52, closed)

Not really. It typically runs about the same/slightly slower on the same hardware for most tasks.

XP was good enough that it would never have died, had Microsoft not killed it. And whilst it's not selling anymore (other than as a 7Pro downgrade), it'll still be in use right up to the point they discontinue support.

Only
months left I think. Microsoft will stop system updates on XP service pack 3 within 3 months, which is a bummer.
(, Fri 5 Nov 2010, 15:55, closed)

it's good until 2014 - mainstream support has already ended (I think), but security updates will still be pushed out.
