This is a question Books

We love books. Tell us about your favourite books and authors, and why they are so good. And while you're at it - having dined out for years on the time I threw Dan Brown out of a train window - tell us who to avoid.

I have several favourites
The wasp factory was weird and wonderful.

David Eddings as a teen was just fantastic. The Belgarion was so ingrossing.

The Faraway treee was one of those childrens books I could pick up today and be quiet happy reading too

Enjoyed The Wasp Factory but
Felt aggrieved at the somewhat ridiculous ending. Still it allowed Mr Banks to publish a pretty consistent and good body of work so I can't complain too much

I went off Iain Banks after "The Business"
I even read "Raw Spirit" to get me back into it (he was 1 of my faves & I have all his books). My fave of his is "Complicity" - a hard book to read when you can relate to a lot of it. Worst - "Feersum Enjin", just fucking hard to read and James Joyce did it better.

Of course if that Iain M Banks fella wants to churn out a Culture-based Space opera book every now and then I'm pretty sure I could bring myself to read it.

The Wasp Factory
is the only book I have ever burned. I'd do it again. Don't lend me your copy, 'cos I won't give it back. Horror porn for the smug middle classes at its worst.

I was mystified by the wasp factory
But i find Eddings far to twee. I read the Sparhawk books of his and by the end i just didn't care. His characters never seem to be in any peril due to the awesome amount of power or stupid amount of skill they wield.
