What's more contemptible than this, is the opinion that it is wrong.
It is possible to give 110% - this means that you are giving the previous effort, plus 10%. Hence 110%.

I suspect that openleggy has in mind sports coaches,
who do tend you use the phrase incorrectly. i.e. requesting 110% of their charges available effort rather than compared the effort given in a previous performance. Similarly they tend to use the phrase "we need to push ourselves to the limit, and then push ourselves a little bit more."
