I don't see the point anymore. The original idea was to cut down the number of keys pressed. But with predictive text that's no longer an issue. For example,

That matters not
as it will send as more than one message if it goes over, which is hardly a problem in the days of getting umpteen free texts when you top up.

There is also the EMS protocol that most modern phones have, which does away with the character limit altogether.
