Ginge, that was his name. Probably still is.
As young punks, we used to all sit on a wall outside a record shop. A teenage girl pulled up on her pushbike, and entered the shop. Ginge made a big show of going to the bike, and sniffing the seat, just as a cop came round the corner.
He was totally gobsmacked and disgusted, bollocked Ginge, then took him down to the station, and bollocked him some more. It was one of the funniest things I've ever see. We were almost on the floor laughing. Poor Ginge.

I remember people going on about bike seat-sniffing, or 'sniding', as the then boyf called it,
back in the late 70s.

It was something that you teased your mates about doing when you got bored with accusing them of flashing.

it has several names:

nurfing v. Garbooning (qv); nerding; pooming; shniffle-piffling; snaffling; snarfing; snarzing; snerking; snurdling; snurging. The (presumably very common) act of sniffing a lady's bicycle seat.
