This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

*Bit* of a massive generalisation
I've never seen Sir Trevor McDonald do any of these things, for example.

Unless he's "pretending to be white".

I had to Google him.
I've known a few people from Trinidad. Culturally they're basically white, and always seemed to me to be something other than black. (I had one as a professor and knew a couple of students.) Ditto on the British blacks I've met so far. American blacks are a whole different creature for the most part- though I've known quite a few that were no more hiphop than I am.

I'd say that if Sir Trevor were to start talking like Fittysen or FlavaFlav he'd look rather ridiculous, just as Mike Wallace would. Or Colin Powell.

eh!
Why doesn't your post start "I'm not a racist but..." In fact, fuck it, why not "I'm a massive racist and..."

Wierd wierd wierd ideas about skin colour & behavior revolving around your head.

Eh?
How is it racist to say that pikey, white kids shouldn't be trying to imitate black, urban culture? I don't think the Loon is berating white people who like to listen to hip-hop, but certainly if you're a white lad in Swindon town centre dressed like Nelly then you just look like a twat.

You should see the Japanese doing it... It's even worse. They have all the clothes but have NO idea what it's all about since they pretty much only get commercial hip-hop here. It does tickle me.

eh eh?
I was replying to the post above mine, not the orional.

The whole, this is how dirrent races should dress / behave thing, is a great big pile-o-shite.

What people are saying is; "I have an expectation about you based on your race..." bollocks.

I agree.
If you dress like a 'thug' or 'gangsta', or whatever it's called these days, it doesn't matter if you're black, white, yellow or green with purple spots.

You're still a cunt.

yeah agreed,
but your a cunt coz your a cunt, not becuase your behaviour isn't conforming to the expected racial stereotype.

For the record I'll say it here
it has nothing to do with actual race, and everything to do with one's culture. Please refer to my other post for more on this.

Too much to put here
so I'll simply redirect you here, to a rebuttal.

Don't say "blacks". It's "black people".

You don't call people who can't see "blinds".
(, Fri 17 Oct 2008, 17:22, closed)
Sorry.
Over here in America that's the normal term. They're blacks, we're whites, others are Latinos or Asians or whatever.

Again, a little bit of a cultural gap that gets into our language as well.
