Common
Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."
My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.
What stuff do you think is common?

Slough suburbs
No one actually lives in Slough - people will tell you they live in Cippenham, Eton Wick or Windsor..
Do these people think that by making up a slightly posher suburb it will make them sound less common? Probably happens with every big town..
And yes, I do know that Slough is a complete shit hole

It's good that you're proud..
My Nan lives in Chalvey - but that sounds worse than Slough..
I live in Gerrards Cross (i'm not posh though) but no one ever knows where that is so I just say "Slough"

It's the opposite...
...in Cambridge. If you live in the suburbs (they did used to be seperate villages)such as Cherry Hinton, Arbury, Trumpington, Chesterton you just tell people you live in Cambridge. I'm pretty sure Grantchester is an exception to that rule still!

Probably for the best.
When people find out I live in Arbury, they usually respond with a "But you're so middle class!" (I'm not, by the way - just reasonably well-spoken and a bit of an arty, pretentious wanker.) This is then followed by a ongoing and thinly veiled fear that I may knifecrime them for smack money.
