This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Roll ups, apparently.
Before I gave up smoking I was on the rollies. I'd smoked them for years, found them far preferable to straights, and wasted much less money than I would otherwise have done.

But they are considered common...

"You got a spare fag, mate?"

"Uh, sure. Can you roll or would you like me to do..."

"Fuck off. I'm not smoking none of them fucking rollies."

And that was just the tramps.

I found widespread disdain for them. I'd begin the ritual of creating another perfectly crafted cigarette when a 'normal' fag would be thrust in my face. "No, thanks, I actually prefer roll ups." I'd retort. The thruster would respond with a derisive snort and the relationship would forever be damaged beyond repair.

I can't see what the problem is. Mind you, I've always been a bit common anyway... suppose it's what comes of growing up as a cider swilling wurzel.

My cousin
referred to them as "Row-ups" (row rhyming with cow). He also pronounced "bounce" as "boonce". Drove me mental.

There is less snobbery about rollies these days
since the price of fags went up

rollies are just better
fact

they are cheaper, taste better and have less shit in them.

and you get the smug pleasure of being able to churn out perfect cigarettes when your average fumbled-fingered straight-smoking loser can't

That was my attitude. I couldn't stand smoking normal fags and have always hated the smell of them.

What's more, it meant I made the best reefers, which was a blessing and a burden: always had to skin up - always got to smoke it first.

Rollies forever
Im a rollie smoker.. They taste better, last longer, cost less. £10 a week as opposed to £6 per day....except you get a yellow finger.. but apart from that yay rollies!!
And yes, it did mean I also had to skin up but as you say.. first dibs.. yay rollies again!

I stopped smoking roll-ups
When I first got a job.
Didn't like the yellow fingers, bits of baccy all over my house/car and not being able to have a fag on the go.

But the tramp thing made me laugh.

if you get
yellow fingers, you're doing something wrong, stick a filter in for starters, and make sure the skins nice and tight around it. Smoking anything will eventually yellow your fingers mind

roll in advance
and the smell really doesn't linger around your house either.

I actually think roll ups are rather sexy
Oggling sexy men with their squinting eyes as they push back their long dark hair and take a puff on their little paper ciggie....

Mmmm...
