As of XPit's the notification area...
System tray was a Windows 95/98/possibly Me (not that anyone ever used it) concept.

(I still call it the system tray as well. Although embarrassingly, due to the ineptitude of our users, I mostly seem to call it 'the bit by the clock')

According to Raymond Chen,a Microsoft developer who works on the Windows shell, it's always been called the notification area.
Doesn't stop everyone from calling it the "system tray", but pedantry tends to go hand-in-hand with geekery. ;-)
