Sheffield, so West Riding.It had always puzzled me that Yorkshire has North, East and West Riding, but no 'South'. I thought that perhaps Derbyshire is actually the South Riding in disguise. A little research yielded this factoid; The word 'riding' as used in this context is a corruption of the Norse word 'þriðjungr' which means one third, thus there can only be three Ridings.
