Young People Can't Afford Cars
Getting right on my tits recently was the flurry of 'news' stories wringing their hands over the fact that students can no longer afford cars and are having to resort to - shock horror - public transport to get around as if this was somehow an infringement of their human rights.

In an era of out of town shopping centres/supermarkets,
and being able to afford to leave near where you work, not having the use of a car can be a serious disadvantage. Not a human rights infringement, but then I doubt that anyone ever claimed that.

Get a 125cc bike
£2k to get started all in (bike, CBT, gear etc), 120mpg, £300ish/year insurance after that. No mates using you as a taxi either.

When I were a lad, er I mean student, way back in the late '80s...
We walked, got the bus or, horror of horrors, cycled!
Yup, got on our bikes and just fucking got on with it.
And no, I didn't even contemplate the idea of a car, I spent my first student loan on a bike which I have to this day.
A Saracen Toughtrack Extreme (?), if you're interested. Back in the day when Saracen still made proper bikes.

I'm a student
Out of my 50 class mates, 120 society members and however many other sundry aquaintances, I know exactly three students who have a car. The rest of us are more than happy to get the bus, and frankly baffled as to why the other 3 need a car in the first place.

Granted, we're mostly arts students, so perhaps it's the maths students who are so appalled? Your post was news to me, anyway. But I guess I am a pampered cunt by association.

EDIT: Although my city does have an excellent bus service. I can see it being an issue if that's not available.
