This is a question Get Rich Quick

Jabboy contacted us because he's skint. So what have you done to make money fast? Did you actually make anything, or were you just ripped off by someone who really was getting rich quick? Did you have to sell your soul?

PS. Jabboy is available for rent on 0870 88673242

The evils of Cash Converter
Meekman and the Computer Exchange thread reminded me of the evils of Cash Converter.

Cash Converter, are truly evil bastards of the highest order. I can’t help but feel a tinge of sorrow for the poor buggers that sold their stuff to them. They have had to sell something really cool all because they were strapped for cash and trying to make ends meet, and were probably within inches from getting knee capped by their tyrannical landlords for not paying the rent, or whatever. But I also think that perhaps some skank has sold their stuff just because they’re a human drink and drugs cabinet, and sold their stuff just so they can sort/inject/ingest cheap anything.

Anyway, I digress…

It was around ten years back, and I had bought myself a Sony Minidisc recorder to add to my Hi-Fi seperates. I decided that I no longer needed x2 single deck tape recorders, and got rid of the lower spec’d one of the two, an Aiwa ADF-450 (the other was the ADS-750 that had HX-Pro, and Dolby B,C, and S noise reduction, that one was a definite keeper). Barely anybody had a PC or Mac, nevermind an internet connection, and eBay had probably yet to exist. Or, it was in its infancy. I have only been online since 2002.

Therefore, I decided to sell my surplus Tape Deck to Cash Converters. So, I brought it to the Wigan branch (the nearest one to me). I thought that I was going to make a good price on it. Regretfully I didn’t.

They poured through an endless sea of catalogues to find out how much it was brand new. Annoyingly, they had also heard of Richer Sounds too, and had a few back catalogues to check the brand new value of it. To make matters worse, they had an ADF-450 already in the window for sale, which made the resell value of my surplus Tape Deck even worse.

I got shut of the Tape Deck for the relatively poxy sum of £15. I would have got £30 if they didn't have the identical model to mine in the window, they had the cheek to tell me. I couldn’t be arsed lugging the thing back home (my journey was done by public transport), and so it went for peanuts.

The Tape Deck that was already in the window was for sale @ £50.

Cash Converters are total wankers people. Avoid them like the plague, you will have better luck selling your stuff on “The ‘Bay”.

Chav converters
These folk are total cunters. I once had to get some money to eat (no joke) and decided to sell my spanky sony sound system with remote control speakers (that did stuff). I walked 3 miles to the chav palace with heavy load in a bag, to get offered £40. Cunts. It was worth £350 second hand. I took it though cuz of desperation. I did piss in their window a year later though.

Bastards.
I used these ratbags' services just the once. As a student (and utterly dismal 'writer' for the union's fortnightly newspaper), I attempted to raise some money by flogging Cash Converters a pile of promo CDs I'd been given to review.

I suppose the good thing about offering them new-release CDs is that, unlike name-brand stuff, they have no idea of their value. The clueless manager serving me couldn't tell whether I was offering him priceless rarities, Top 10 bestsellers or what. He had no idea that I was actually attempting to offload a pile of old shit that nobody with ears would touch with a pooey stick (anyone remember Cecil, by the way?).

Anyhow, I'd like to end this story by triumphantly gloating that I convinced the evil Cash Converters to pay me £50 for a handful of worthless guff. Unfortunately, what actually happened was that he took one look at them, started asking me for three forms of ID, utility bills, last two addresses etc, before deciding that it was too much trouble and offering me a quid for the lot.

Lazy bastards.

dealers in misery
These shops are the lowest of the low.

If you are really skint you flog your telly or whatever to them - they give you well under its real 2nd hand value. You have little choice.
If you are less skint and need a telly, you assume they will be cheap in cash converters as its 2nd hand. you buy the telly at their huge markup without doing a little research and finding you could have got a similar spec telly brand new from John Lewis down the road.

Last time I walked past the Aberdeen branch, they had a sign in the window spouting along the lines of how you could sell your car to them, then rent it back off them to "free up its value". I dread to think what sort of deal with the devil that really is.

most
of the stuff in my CCs are the proceeds of local crime. accept the tools which are all buggered from the local tradies. and almost universaly what others have expressed here is true. however, every now and then something crops up that the valuers have no idea about so they have a stab at it. i have made 3 gold purchaces. 1. new fender strat for AU$600. worth $1400. even pushed them for a hard flight case that was hidden at the bottom of the pile. 2. 100 year old violin. $120. valued after superficial repairs at $1100. 3. SCSI tape back up system $35 re sold for $250. selling to them is a waste of time, and i do feel for people who have had stuff knocked off. if you want a deal out of them, they usualy cave in on price when you wave cash under the boss nose....
