So, the Nativity.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Nazareth not in Israel? Therefore, how likely is it that Jesus, and indeed his mother, were blonde-haired and blue-eyed as opposed to dark-haired and dark-skinned? Thought so.

So why the hell is it the little Aryan kid who plays Mary every year? *bitters*

In fairness...
Since "arya" is a Sanskrit word, the idea that even Aryans should be blond is a bit odd. ("Iran" means "land of the Aryans"...) So, though he wasn't Aryan himself, Jesus probably looked more Aryan than do most modern Europeans.

I'll shut up now, shall I?

That's interesting... especially since I meant it in ze Nazi sense.
My point still stands, however, that blonde girls aren't the best to play Mary - I was a dark-haired (OK, fair-skinned, two ginger nans will do that to you) girl and I always wanted to be Mary :(

You're completely right.
I'm just being a tosser.

UNLESS....

Jeebus was, miraculously, a cracker honky...

I thought he was Jewish?
You know, descendant of David and all that, just like the Old Testament prophecised? Kind of the whole point of Joseph, kind of the whole point of them going back to Bethlehem due to a Census of Jews or something? So Mary would surely be Jewish too?
So yeah, if you don't have a lot of Jewish kids around you can't really do a nativity play, but if you did have a lot of Jewish kids around there would be no reason to do a nativity play...this is hard stuff...

Also...
Given that the average height for a man today (in the UK at least) is 5 ft 10 and in the mid 19th Century was 5 ft 5 and at the Battle of Hastings was believed to be 5ft 2 if Jesus was around 2000 odd years ago he would've been tiny...

Therefore lighter...
... therefore less likely to topple off the cross.

Hurrah!

I have asked the same question
Back when I was younger I used to waste my time arguing with the fundamentalist-evangelical wackos thinking they might actually listen to reason and fact (until I realized most of them had brains like rotted cheese whey). I used to mention that Jesus was probably closed to being black than white. Some would get really mad at me and give me the hell threat and others would get very concerned for me and give me the hell threat. Different evangelicals at different times told me there was a smaller tribe of blue eyed blond white people living in the area of the Middle East that Jesus came from. He could never have been anything but white in their small minds. I never once spoke to one who agreed that Jesus would have been dark skinned.
