I agree that own brand paint is mainly shite and its best to stick to well known makes of paint.
Also never buy non-drip gloss paint or gloss paint that supposedly requires no undercoat. Go out and buy undercoat and a good brand of proper "drippy" paint. The non-drip stuff starts drying before you have had a chance to brush it evenly and you tend to end up with a lot of brush marks. Textured finish anyone?!

Also water based low VOC gloss paint isn't. Water based paint is good for walls, but on wood its pants. If you hate the smell of solvent wait till its a warm day before painting and leave the windows open

My old man used to leave a peeled onion in a bucket of warm water in the room as well.
