I did something similar when I was on a school visit to Italy.Wandered down to the water's edge, slipped and fell in, discovered that the cobbled slope that made up the shore of the lake offered absolutely no purchase. No danger of drowning, but I was forced to endure the jeers of my friends as they watched me scrabbling at the sides, before they decided that I'd suffered enough and pulled me out.
